Wood Flooring – Everything You Need To Know
The elegant look of a hardwood floor can add warmth and character to any room in a home. The natural characteristics of wood add depth and a visual appearance that many other types of floors try to duplicate. With the demand for hardwood flooring growing manufacturer’s are enhancing their ranges to meet this demand, with better quality finishes and superior construction techniques.
Hardwood floors come in a wide variety of wood species, colours and widths. Besides the classic hardwoods (like red oak, white oak, maple and ash) many manufacturers now offer exotic hardwood species from all over the World. Exotic hardwoods give homeowners the chance to better express their own personal decorating tastes with a more unique looking floor. With so many different types of hardwood flooring now available it is sometime hard to choice which is best suited to you.
Different Types of Wood Flooring
Solid wooden floors are one solid piece of wood that have tongue and groove sides and come in either pre-finished or unfinished styles. Solid wood floors are sensitive to moisture and it is not recommended to install these floors below ground level, or directly over a concrete slab. These floors are for nail-down installations only. You can refinish, or recoat solid wood floors several times, which adds to their appeal and to their long life. There are solid floors that are over 100 years old and are still in good condition.
All solid wood floors will react to the presence of moisture. In the winter heating months, moisture leaves the wood causing the floor to contract which leaves unsightly gaps between each plank. In the summer months when the humidity is higher the wood will expand and the gaps will disappear. If there is too much moisture it may cause the wood planks to cup, or buckle. This is why it is important when installing a solid strip floor to leave the proper expansion area around the perimeter and to acclimatize the wood prior to installation.
Engineered wood floors – These floors are constructed from several wood plies that are glued together. The centre core is generally a softer wood material and is used to make the tongue and groove. A hardwood finish layer is glued on top of the centre core and another softer wood ply is attached underneath the core. This top ply is also called the finish layer and can be constructed of almost any wood specie.
Wood always wants to expand in a certain direction. In the presence of moisture solid wood planks will always expand across the width of the planks, rather than down the length of the boards. To avoid this problem, manufacturers of engineered planks place each ply in the opposite direction of each other. This is called cross-ply construction. Once the wood layers are glued together the plies will counteract each other which will stop the plank from growing or shrinking with changes in the humidity. Engineered wood floors are designed for the floating installation and can be glued together or some now come with a click system.
Veneer wood floors are very similar to laminate floors. The only difference is that with a veneer flooring to top wear layer is a thin piece or real hardwood instead of a photographic image as in laminates. Veneer flooring is usually around 8mm in thickness with the top hardwood layer being around 0.7mm. Advantages of a veneer floors are that they are fast and easy to install and you have a real hardwood floor.
Factory Pre-finished Wood Flooring
Most factory finished hardwood floors have several coats of finish applied to the wood’s surface. As example, many wood floor companies are applying 6-10 coats of a ultra-violet (UV) cured urethane. This would be extremely difficult for someone to duplicate on a job site finish, not to mention how many days it would take. This is one of the reasons why many flooring mechanics, flooring retailers, and builders are pushing pre-finished hardwood floors. Instead of taking several days to install and finish a new hardwood floor a pre-finished hardwood floor is generally done in one day.
The most common finishes are:
UV-cured – Factory finishes that are cured with Ultra Violet lights versus heat.
Polyurethane – A clear, tough and durable finish that is applied as a wear layer.
Acrylic-urethane – A slightly different chemical make up than Polyurethane with the same benefits.
Aluminium Oxide – Added to the urethane finish for increased abrasion resistance of the wear layer, which is becoming extremely popular on the better grade wood floors.
Acrylic Impregnated – Acrylic monomers are injected into the cell structure of the wood to give increased hardness and then finished with a wear layer over the wood.
Unfinished Wood Flooring
If you want a custom stained hardwood floor, or a wood floor to match existing trim than a unfinished hardwood floor is your answer. Unfinished means you start with a bare hardwood floor and than the floor is sanded, stained, and finished in the home. This can be quite a mess and the process does take several days, but your floor will have a finish to you requirements.
Installation Options
Nail Down – Secret nails are used with a wood flooring nailer and mallet to attach the flooring to the sub floor. Solid Strip floors or Plank floors can only be installed on wooden sub-floors or on batons.
Glue Down – Engineered wood floors and parquets can be glued down. This is when you spread the recommended glue all over the sub floor and lay the flooring into the glue.
Floating – This is when a thin underlay is placed between the wood flooring and the sub floor. A recommended wood glue is then applied in the tongue and groove of each plank to hold the planks together. Engineered

Nordic Walking Poles – Not All Hiking And Trekking Poles Are Created Equal
Skiers know that one-piece poles are the only option for skiing. And ski racers want one-piece poles that are light and yet super strong. And when it comes to Nordic walking, hiking and trekking poles, one-piece poles prove to be safer, lighter and much more durable. Cheap and flimsy 2-piece and 3-piece poles with twist-locks or flip-locks tend to rattle, vibrate and/or collapse unexpectedly.
The original poles used for hill bounding and ski walking were one-piece poles. EXEL Nordic Walking Poles were the first official “Nordic Walking Poles” – based on lightweight yet durable carbon cross country ski poles. Downhill ski poles and trekking poles typically are fatter and much heavier than cross country poles. Adding twist-locks or flip-locks increases vibration and noise (rattle), adds additional weight and provides a weak spot(s) that can allow the poles to fail and/or collapse unexpectedly. I just want to tell you how much I love my new VIP Carbon poles. Hi Pete -Thanks so much for getting my order completed so promptly. The poles were delivered when I got home from work yesterday. Usually I go to a nearby park, walk 2 miles, and then go home to get the dog to walk another 2. Ski Walking has been a blessing to me! I quickly opened the box and took them with me to try them out.
I started after Christmas break,, improving eating habits using a web site called www.myfooddiary.com. It’s the incentive I needed to work towards better health. I also began cross country skiing every day, doing that same 2-mile trail on my way home from work. I think I missed 1 day in the following 2 months until the snow melted in early March. I took off 25 pounds in that time, with eating well and skiing every day. Then, I was worried. How could I replace the same calorie burn in the same amount of time?
So, I went to MC Sports and bought cheap collapsible poles, .95. One pole developed a vibration in it which I found very annoying. That’s how I found you last Saturday on Amazon. I wish I’d known about you a couple of weeks ago. I love your poles!

Your poles are so much more lightweight. I use them in the woods on a dirt/sand trail. I haven’t had time to watch your DVD/Video. I love ski walking! I don’t feel like it’s hard to do, and it’s not as boring as working out in some health club. I’ve checked my heart rate during the walk, and it’s between 80-90% of maximum for my age. It takes about a half-hour to do the 2 miles, unless I have to wait too much for the dog to sniff! Using the ipod also helps the workout to go faster.
Anyway, thanks for the great service, and thanks for the poles!

Thanks for your prompt email! I also had a knee injury which caused me to
quit running also. I gained weight, but just got back out and started walking this summer. I added miles and found I could walk very well with a knee brace on. Suddenly, I started walking better w/o limping. I bought some of the cheap adjustable walking poles from Walmart, but then found out about your real Nordic walking poles.

I really have enjoyed my poles and not having to worry about them collapsing. More and more people are stopping me and asking me about them and the advantages. I could do an informercial! I dropped off one of my last brochures to a woman today who saw me walking on Saturday and asked me about them. Our new minor league ballpark opened yesterday, so I had my poles and was walking and a woman asked me about them. I didn’t have a brochure, but I gave her your e-mail address and she wrote it down. I tell everyone the price is great and the poles are very sturdy. I’ve put a lot of miles on them. People who know a little more about the poles are very impressed with the quality of the tips, especially the boot-shaped tips..they have told me that they can’t find the quality of rubber tips like the ones you have. So, hopefully, more people will be using them and enjoying them as much as I do. I’m getting physical therapy but I know I couldn’t walk the distances I do if I didn’t have your Nordic ski walking poles.

I’ve been researching ski walking. I usually walk my farm with my two dogs. I bought a pair of adjustable poles about a month ago. I’m researching because I was immediately impressed with my physical
response to using the poles while walking. I usually come back from a walk with a sore right hip. Since I’ve been using the poles I have no pain. Also the poles help me balance on uneven terrain. My only
problem is that my poles are adjustable and the tip got caught in a slat on a wooden bridge. I couldn’t adjust it and walked with only one pole – what a pain in the bum. Now I see your poles and I wish I had done my research sooner before buying the adjustable poles.

What Exactly is a Custom Full-color Banner?
Custom banners communicate a message to their intended audience typically in a large, colorful format. Banners come in a variety of sizes and materials based on their intended use – indoors or outdoors – their intended audience, and length of service required. How are Custom Banners Printed?
There are three methods of producing banners commonly in use today. The first is Vinyl Lettering in which each letter or graphic is printed on a vinyl, adhesive-backed substrate and then affixed to the banner material. This is a very labor-intensive process and tends to be used for small runs. The second process is Digital Printing which prints each banner on very large format printers, much like your office inkjet printer only on steroids. These printers use different inks depending on the type of banner and longevity desired. Billboard sized banners are often made out of several smaller digital print banners which are then sewn together to create the whole image. Digital print banners provide for a great deal of latitude in customization and the main cost involved is the material on which the banner is to be printed. The third banner printing process is Silk Screening. The silk screening process creates “stencils”, or screens, of the graphics to be used out of a fine mesh using a photographic process. The screens are then framed in wood or aluminum. Each stencil is then used to “lay-up” a color of ink on the banner by pulling a rubber squeegee over the screen with each color of ink. The process is repeated with each screen, eventually creating the graphic desired. This process is preferred for manufacturing many copies of the same banner.
Indoor or Outdoor ?
The wonderful thing about custom banners is the wide variety of installations that are possible. Banners can be installed across the outside of buildings, on fences, delivery truck side panels, between lamp posts…the list is endless. The main concern is whether the banner will be outdoors or indoors. Banners intended for use outdoors must be more ruggedly constructed and use special inks to withstand the weather, especially if the banner will be mounted for an extended period of time. Of course, these extra considerations add to the cost of outdoor banners relative to the same size indoor banner. Another factor to be considered when dealing with outdoor versus indoor banners is their visibility.
The average person viewing an outdoor banner typically has only a few seconds to make out and register the message contained on the banner. Therefore, outdoor banners should be attention grabbing, simple and properly sized. The size of the text will have the greatest influence on visibility. When calculating visibility, the average distance of the viewer from the banner must be determined. If the viewing audience is 100 feet from the banner, the text will have to be a minimum of 4 inches in height. As the viewer moves farther away, the size of the text increases exponentially. For example, a person standing roughly a city block away will not be able to see the message clearly unless the letters are 16 inches tall. At a quarter of a mile, the letters would have to be almost 5 feet tall!
Marketing Effectiveness
Comparing the marketing effectiveness of custom banners to other forms of advertising is a little tricky due to the sheer variety of uses for banners. If we consider their effectiveness compared against billboards, banners offer many advantages. Banners are generally much less expensive. Billboards are typically priced based on their “showings”. This is a rating which is calculated based on the number of people in a given population who will see the billboard. Billboards with higher showings can run to many thousands of dollars per month to lease and that’s not including the printing costs. Billboards have a fixed location and may share space with other advertisements. Banners can be easily moved for maximum viewing opportunities. Banners may also be re-used again and again as necessary.

The check is in the mail. You’ve heard that one before right? Maybe you’ve even used that line yourself, and then you went out and mailed it. Last Friday Bush outlined what he felt would be the saving grace for the economic downturn that we’re facing- tax rebates! I simply don’t see the 8 billion give away changing the economy at all except in adding more debt!
Those long-promised tax rebates are now on their way to U.S. taxpayers. People who chose to have their rebates directly deposited into their bank accounts will see the money there beginning Monday. The government’s paper checks will start going out on May 9, a week earlier than previously announced.
The extra cash is part of the economic stimulus package intended to help Americans cope with rising gasoline and food prices, as well as aid a slumping economy. The Internal Revenue Service says all checks for those who filed tax returns on time are scheduled to be deposited or mailed by July 11.
So, let me understand this a bit better.
An individual is going to get 0 and for the average Houstonian who commutes to work downtown or the inner city that means it will pay for his gasoline for three weeks. And that’s going to save the economy? I don’t get it. And some people won’t get their tax rebate until mid July. Roof windows and skylights are extremely useful and valuable accessories for the roofs.

It’s true that when you break the continuity of one surface exposed to weathering, various problems with waterproofing might happen.
If, however, you use the right product plus the right craftsmanship problems can well be minimized, even eliminated.
So why roof windows and skylights leak?
1) First thing, check the possibility of condensation. Condensation is a very common phenomenon usually taking place on thermal bridges.
The phenomenon is more pronounced when:
- External temperatures are low.
- Internal humidity is high.
- There is a lack of ventilation and heating.
- There is presence of ice dams.
- Cold rain comes in touch with the window pane.
Of course, as expected, the majority of these problems occur in kitchens and bathrooms.
If the problem is irrelevant to precipitations, it is most probably condensation.
2) On the contrary, if the problem follows a precipitation, there is somewhere a break in continuity. In this case:
2.1) Check if the pane fits absolutely in the sash.
2.2) Check the installation of the proprietary metal flashings.
2.3) Check the application of self adhesive base and cap flashings.
2.4) Check for accumulation of dirt, leaves, dust etc. round the curb.
2.5) Check all exposed nails.
2.6) Check for cracks or fractures on curbs.
2.7) Check eventual sealants compounds: Has the right product been used? How about application?
2.8) Check eventual flanges and their fitting to shingles. Waterproofing with an appropriate sealant may be needed.
2.9) Inspect all flashings in proximity to the skylights or roof windows.
The very fact: Skylights and roof windows will fail if not installed and maintained properly. Choose wisely the product and the contractor and pay attention to the proper maintainance.
